ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

Ths weekly meeting of this Sooiety was held on Saturday in the Society's room, Canada Buildings— Mr, Gillies in the chair. There were present : Mesars. Maokelvie, flail, Hidings, and Burtt. The minutes of last meeting were read and approved. NEW MEMBfIR 07 COUNCIL. Mr. Maoiklvie moved that Mr. Wayte, of Messrs. Wayte and Batger, be added to the Council in place of Mr. Brighton, who had been appointed curator to the Society. He wished that Mr.Wayfce, who had considerable experience in the rearing and treatment of birds, should be added to tbe Domain Committee, with himself and Mr. Murdoch. Mr. Hidings seconded the motion, which was •greed to. BXPOBT ON THS WOBKING 07 THE ACT. The Chairman then read the following report from the committed which had been appointed to consider the working of the Protection to Certain Animals Act : — £t" Your committee beg to report that they have carefully examined the Protection to Certain Animals Act, and the Amendment Act, 1866, and recommend that application be made to the Government to bring In an Amendment Act in reference to the following matters, and that the members for this province be recreated to use their influence in obtaining mch an Act passed. "1. In the second section of the Act of 1865, the word 'English' to be struck out, as there is a probability of plover being introduced from South America. "2. In section 6, a prohibition should be added from shooting, 4c, at any time between sunset and ■unnie, as a practice is springing up of taking pheasants after dark. All the words after 'Sunday' m this section might be advantageously omitted, being superfluous. "3. In section 11, provision should be made for taking birds for purposes of distribution to or exchange with, places oat of the colony. "4. In section 13, birds, &c, kept in confinement should not only be allowed to be taken and killed but to be bought and sold. ' ",$. In section 3 of the Acb of 1866, the word • enclosed' should be struck out, as your committee we no reason why a proprietor should be prohibited from shooting on his own unenclosed land. The word • proprietor' in this clause should be defined as including the sons of the owner, any tenant in possession of lands for a term of over one year and mortgagee in possession. ' •« 6. In section 4. This clause and the form of license should be amended so as distinctly to show that license-holders can only shoot during the ■hooting season. Much misapprehension prevails as to the privilege conferred by a license, owing to the wording of this clause. The title of tbe Act in the form of license is erroneous, there being no such Act as therein quoted. , i "7. In section 5. Persons taking a license to 101 l should be entitled under" that license to sell to a Uofrjfled dealer, j

"8. Jo section 10. Cost of licenses, printing, Advertising, Ac., should be deducted from the liotive fees before payment to the Acclimatisation Society. " 9. A clause should be added' empowering the Governor by .proclamation to lower the license ft e for shooting in any diitriot to not leu than £3. This may be necessary in another year or two in loms parts of this province. > " 10. Delegation of the Governor's powers, under section 17 of the Act of 1865, should be made to the Superintendent of this province. " 11. The Chairman said that it would be necessary at once to take aome action in the matter, as the Assembly was now sitting. Mr. Sidings moved the adoption of the report, which was seconded by Mr. MaokUiVEE and agreed to. The Chairmah suggested that the Seoietary should send a copy of the report to the Colonial Secretary, with a request that the Government should bring in a bill to give effect to the recommendation!. A copy might also be sent to the Superintendent, requesting him to see the Colonial Secretary on the subject, and to assist in getting a bill passed. This concluded the business, and the meeting adjourned.
