[Before T. Biokhau, Eiq., E.M.] DRUNKENNESS. John Connell, Abraham Le Quesne, and John Collins were punished for drunkenness. HIGHWAY RATES. Edward Fartington was charged with nonpayment of £3 09, 5 d,, highway rates for the Mount Albert district. Defendant pletded guilty, saying that he had been ill, or he would have attended to the matter before. James Walker was summoned for nonpayment of highway rates in the Mount Albert district to the amount of £6 ss. lOd. Mr. Walker said he had given up the farm to Mr. Bray, who had undertaken to relieve him from the rates. .The case was delayed, in order that Mr. Walker might attempt to arrange with, or [might sue, Mr. Bray. BREACH OS" MUNICIPAL ACT. Robert IS. Rycrofb was charged by the Inspector of Nuisances with having been away from his" vehicle, so as not to have the full control over the game. He was also charged with going on the footpath with his vehiole. Defendant pleaded guilty to the second charge, and the first was withdrawn, as the horse had been left standing on a vacant allotment off Vulcan-lane, and not on the street. Defendant said that he could not help going on the footpath for a little piece, as the street in which the offenoe occurred, Vulcanlane, was "very narrow. Fined 20s. and costs. BRRAOH OF LICENSING ACT. Henry Clarke was oharged with a breach of the Licensing Act by supplying liquor from ths Shakespeare Hotel " between the legal hour of closing on Saturday night and the legal hour of opening on Monday morning." Mr. Ritchie appeared for defendant, and pleaded guilty, statiig what he considered were mitigating circumstances. Mr. Commissioner Naughton, on being referred to by his Worship, said that the house was well conducted. Fined £5, to include costs. IMPOUNDING ACT. William Kingston was charged with a breach of the Impounding Act by allowing a pig to stray in Hardinge-street. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined 6s, and costs. * X, AROINT. Edward Purdie Lodge was charged with stealing a coffee pot, teapot, milk jug, sugar basin, and Crimean shirt, value in all £&, the property of Walter Gregory. Prosecutor deposed that prisoner had been living with him for the past two months. Witness left home yesterday forenoon, leaving the prisoner in the house. The articles above mentioned were left in the house, and when witness returned in the evening they were gone. (Articles produced and identified.) Cross-examined by the prisoner : 1 have giren you articles to dispose of-fot me* I never said anytuog to you about those things. By the Court : When discovered the loss, I went to Detective O'Hara. J. S. Turner, assistant to Mr. Levy, Loan Office keeper, Queen-street, deposed that the prisoner came to the shop on Thursday evening, and offered the articles that had been produced. He asked for an advance on them. Witness gave him 16a., the goods to be redeemed in a month, interest to be Is. 3d. per week. Witness gave them to the police on Friday evening. Cross-examined by the prisoner: You said the articles were sent by prosecutor. Tou said you were to pay the interest on a watch that we had. You said you were the agent, and that you were sent by other parties.Sergeant lapsey deposed that he apprehended the prisoner in Queen-street, with Is, 4d. on him. Mr, Naughton, on being asked by the Court, said , that prisoner had been two . years in Mount Eden Stookade for passing forged cheques. Prisoner said, if he had intended theft, it was not likely he would have gone to the place wh,ere he had been in the habit of transacting business for.the prosecutor, and given his proper name. , His Worship remarked that prisoner ' was not the first person who had been sent to Mount Eden after being at Mr. Levy's.' Prisoner was found guilty, and sentenoed to six months' imprisonment with hard labour. This concluded the business.
