THE KARAKA GOLDFIELD.

Mb. Commissioner Mackat proceeded to the Thames yesterday morning to open th« Karaka goldfield, and was accompanied by upwards of 100 prospectors and others, in the paddle-steamer ' Enterprise < No. 2>' Two men of the Auckland armed police also accompanied the prospectors, under instructions from the Commissioner of Police. A favourable change in the w^nd also enabled several coasting vessels to take their departure for the same destination. The cutters Bluebell and Cornstalk took down full complements of passengers, and the cutterg Tay and Alabama followed with stores, tools, and general merchandise, together with a number of passengers. Upwards of 150 prospectors therefore left throughout the day to try their fortune on the field, and we may shortly expect to hear something more practical from the locality than we have hitherto been favoured with. Several other coasters purpose leaving to-day, and we have no doubt they will be well filled with passengers. Owing to the close proximity of the field to Auckland, the prospectors need not fear a scarcity or dearneu of provisions, an abundant supply of which can be easily prooured from Auckland merchants and storekeepers, who are already preparing to cater for the requirements of even a much larger number of persons on the grounds.
