CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.

To th» Editor of the Daily Southmu? Oxou. Sjh,— Knowing that you are alwayg an advocate for fair play, I am induced to pen the following to shovr that such was not the paie on the grand conundrum night. In the first place the conundrum* were to be purely original, which X am prepared to lay was not the case, ai on* of the conundrums selected was one which is well known to hare won the prize in Hokitika, and could not hare been forgotton by Mr. Cooke. Besides, the one which gained the prize is reckoned anything but original. A g*iD, there were a number of conundrums sent to Mr. Cooke, which would do no man discredit, that were never read at all, and without (he shadow of immorality in them. Surely that cannot be ooDsidered fair play, nor honourable on the part of Mr. Cooke. If the conundrums tent in were criticized by an intelligent and impartial cominanity, the prize would have gone in another direction, — I am, &e., Fair Play. July 18, 1867. Pn oases of this kind it is hardly fair to be too critical. Perhaps the best or worse conundrum was •warded the prize j but as ifrwas left entirely to he popular voice, Mr. Oevke is not in the least respon•ibis for the decision. Our correspondent will perceive in this matter, we nope, the unerring judgment of the multitude,— Ep. D.S.C.] f
