THE AMATEUR PERFORMANCE AT THE PRINCE OF WALES THEATRE.

As ■will have been observed by advertisement, an amateur dramatic entertainment will take place at at the Prince of Wales Theatre to-night, the funds derivable from the performance being devoted to the assistance of the Ladies' Benevolent Society. We know of no charitable institution in this city more worthy of support and assistance than the institution referred to, for the amount of real good that its members are constantly engaged in need only be thoroughly well known in order to be adequately appreciated^ At the present time the funds of the Society are quite inadequate to meet even , half the demands that are made upon them ; and therefore any assistance of a pecuniary nature, thus -volunteered, will be most gratefully received. The pieces selected for representation this evening consist of Douglas Jerrold's favourite drama entitled "The Kent Day," and Morten's laughable farce of "The Steeplechase." We believe that the, amateurs have devoted considerable time to the preparation of these pieces, and that they feel very, confidenfc kh&b ihey will be able to furnish an entertainment that will at least bear favourable comparison with any amateur performance that has yet been given in this city. Several of the performers are already well and favourably known to the public here, whilst amongst the the remainder we understand, there appear the names of several who have prominently distinguished themselves in the up-country districts in a like manner. It is certainly somewhat a matter of regret that there are 'several other rival attractions this evening, that will, we fear, somewhat lessen an attendance which, considering the object in view, should not fail to be a good one. Still we shall ' trust to see *n audience assembled that wil], at least, evince an Appreciation' of the efforts of those "who have arranged the benefit, as also of the object for whioh it is promised. His Honor the Superintendent has given his patronage, and has also signified bis i intention of being present ; so that, if the amateurs do not obtain quite so large a house as they may have anticipated, they will, no doubt, secure the attendance of all the well-wishers of so charitable an undertaking. In conclusion, we may remark 1 that we understand there is a strong movement on foot to establish an Amateur Dramatic Society in Auckland, the intention of the promoters being to ' furnish occasion*! benefits for, the various charities.
