BOMBAY. (FROM NICOL AND CO.'S OVERLAND CIRCULAR, MARCH 13.)

The English mail of 11th ultimo armed in harbour on the 6th instant. ' That of 18th came in late last night. The China steamer with Hongkong dates to 15th ultimo arrived on the 6fch instant. Telegrams h»ye been coming forward from England during the past fortnight -with greater rapidity and regularity than has for a long time past been the case, and we are in possession of newi to the 11th instant, on which date the price of cotton in Liverpool, after a gradual decline, had reached a level of ll£d per lb. for fair Dhollera, and the market was represented as still very dull. From Manchester our Utest advices describe the market as depressed, and quote 71b. grey shirtings at 10s 3d per piece. The budget of Mr. Masiey, the Indian finance Minister, was issued in Calcutta on the sth instant, and from the particulars which have since reached us, we learn that the import; duties on piece goods, yarns, and metals have been considerably reduced. Beyond this there is nothing whioh calls for special notice here, if we except perhaps the abolishment at length of the export duty oh saltpetre. The increase of the duty on exports of grain to 3as. per maund has produced considerable dissatisfaction. Imports : A fair business has been done, but at a gradual decline in price?. Exports; Cotton also has been steadily giving way in value, although transactions have again been considerable. Freights have further advanced. Exchange is decidedly in favour of remitters. Money : There is little or no change to notice. Government securities are slightly

lower. Freights. — We have again had an active demand for tonnage, and a further material advance in rates of freight has taken place: Large engagements have been made for shipment daring April and May, principally on European account, and the available tonnage in harbour has undergoae a further reduction in I consequence. , Clearances during the ensuing fortnight will be considerable, and we think with moderate arrivals it is likely rates will be maintained. Closing quotations are as follow: —To London : Cotton, £2 5s to £2 10a ; seeds, £1 10s to £1 15s. To Liverpool: Cotton, £2 15s to £3; seeds, 15s. To Havre : Cotton, £3 10s. Troops.— The 'Sussex' has been taken up for conveyance of 160 invalid men home from Bombay and Kurrachee at Rs. 360 per head. Tenders for a further small number will, we understand, shortly be invited. . Lmidon.— There is more cargo offering, and t&§ ' VeneJin ' w loading at our quotation!,

Liverpool.— Considerable engagements have been? made since last mail, particulars of which will be found subjoined. Beady ships have not been s* much inquired for, but we anticipate there will be a better demand during the enauing fortnight, an a. number of the vessels on the berth are fully engaged 1 and will clear in a few days, Havre.— The 'City of Canton' hai been chartered for a fall cargo of cotton at £3 17s 6d per ton. The following are the transactions reported, London: 'Venelia,' 673 tons, £2, and £9 fig, March shipment. Sussex, 1,304 tons, 160 invalid troops, Ks. 360 per head jgums, tojffi Liverpool: 'Helen Wallace,; 872 tan* fulj cargo, £2 sa. All Maroh shipment option o* 1,152 tons, p»rfc cotton, £2 6s 3d,. AprflThipment 'Revenue/ 798 tons, ft* cargo, £2 10s., April shipment j • May Queen, 1,054 tow, full cargo, £2 10s and £2 Iff* April 'MahabTeshwar,' 1,303 tons, full cargo,;^Apd shipment ; • Lydia Williams (iron), 1,175^t0n5, , £3, April shipment; 'Longwood (iron), 1,260 .tout, full ergo, £2 12s 6d to £3, April jkP»° n *f 'Mosi Rose,' 787 tons, full cargo, £2 10* April shipment; < Staverton,' 1,045 tons, full cargo, £2 10s, April shipment; 'Bulwark,' l,aftO tons, part [cargo, £3 2s 6d, April "JiP^*? 'Hydrabad' (iron), 1,339t0n5, part cargo, £8 2s 6a\, April shipment ; 'Mary Stenhou«e,' 1,243 tons, paifc cargo, £2 10s, ready shipment; ' Helvellyn ' l,ol? tons, part cargo. £3, AprH shipment; i '|™»o«"* Somawatty,' 982 tons, part cargo, £2 12t ©d, to arrive; 'Apelles,' 988 tens, p»it cargo, £$, Havre: «City of Canton' (iron), 90* tons, U\ cargo, £3 17s 6d, April loading. Hongkong: 'Helen Wallace,' 572 tons, fall cargo, option of Liverpool. Exchange and Money .—Exchange has been: very firm during the fortnight, dosing at 2s Ofcd to 2* 0 3-16 d, for 4 months' Bank bills, 2s 0 7-16 d, for credits, and document paper 2s 0 9-16 d to 2s Of d per rupee. These rates show a considerable advance upon opening prices, and at the close there was a strong tendency towards further advance ap. parent. We shall now doubtless see a high*? rate ruling to the end of the shipping season. On Calcutta we quote Bank bills on demand, 99| rupeei, 30 days' sight 99 rupees, 60 days' sight 9S rupees, and on China 225 rupees for Bank bills oa demand. Money has been in active request, but is by no. means in plentiful supply, there is still a good deall of distrust abroad, and facilities are much, curtailed! this teason in consequence of the reduced number of existing banks, and the shorter usance on bilk oftexchange. , „ . . Sharks continue almost unsaleable, and quotas tions are lower all round. Govehnment Seoubities havo also deolined to> 87 rupees for fours, 105 rupees for fives, 110 rupees, for fivei-and-a-h*lf • .. , « , ,«, Bullion.— We quote English gold 100, touch 16|, leaves 16-6, Australian gold 16-2 rupees, China silver 108 rupees, and sovereign* 10-8 rupees.
