"ECCE HOMO."

To the Editor of the Daily Sottthuik Crois. SIE, — In reference to the above book, I send you the accompanying extract of a letter written by S. Mob^rly, some time head-master of Winchester School, — &n able scholar and sound divine. It was written to one of a similar character in this country, and whose praise is in all the churches. — I am, <ac, A. B. "'Ecce Homo' purports to be an effort to appreciate the design and work of Christ on the barest historical principles. He declines to avail himself of tradition, or doctrine, or apostolic authority, or anything at all save the most nakedly incontrovertible historical facts ; and on these he spreads a basis of argument which seems to me remarkably strong, and capable of sustaining a complete superstructure of Christ's teaching and doctrine. But the language which this design compels him to use is to many most heavily offensive ; aud men like Pusey, Liddon, Wordsworth, Bright, Elhcott, and others are extremely displeased. Meanwhile Gladstone, T. Rogers, Church, Edward Palmer, and others bail it as immense aid against infidelity (though none can fail to be displeased at occasional expressions). If, as I believe, the anonymous writer is a true Christian, he will bo able to build up a most solid and precious book ; but even as far as it goes, I hail it for the strength with which, it puts out the view of the wonderful originality and success of the Lord's design, and opens the way to the recognition of the divineuess of Himself and His Kingdom."
