NATIVE AFFAIRS.
Unpleasant rumours hare been abroad recently in reference to the natives ; but as usual these may be exaggerated. 1 We narrate a fact, however, in another place, in the exodus from Pukorokoro, on the Thames. However, nothing will be left untried by the Provincial authorities to influence the natives to peace. Steps in that direction have already been taken, we understand ; and we can only trust they may be entirely successful. We regret that Te Oriori is very ill. He is labouring under the impression that he is bewitched ; and unless he is removed from his present surroundings, and very differently treated, we fear the worst. His loss would indeed be a serious one at the present crisis.
