Hunter, Houghton, and Co. report:— Our last circular was dated Ist ultimo, and we have lince received the Australian mail of December, to band, Til Galle, on 3rd ultimo. The departures for the colonies since our last hare been the 'Reconnaissance,' for Melbourne and Sydney; the ' Elisabeth' and <Nederland,' for Mel. bourne; and the 'Ystroom' and 'Amyous,' for Sjdney. The ' Victory' has nearly completed her repairs. There are no other vessels on the berth.
Upon our market we report — Arrack, 4 per cent, overproof : Sales at fBO to f 85 per leaguer of 133 imperial gallons. Coffee, Java : The new crop will not be plucked before May. Of last year's produce only trifling lots are procurable at f39 to f4O per picul, for ordinary preparation. Coffee, Padang : Market bare. The next Government will be held at Fadang at the end of this month. It is expected that a much smaller quantity than usual will be offered, say only about 20,000 piculs. Sng«r ! This staple is also scarce, and commands fully fl6 per picul for No. 16. It will be about three months before the new orop finds its way to market. . ilice continues to decline. Hopes are entertained of the crop proving an exceedingly large one. The present value of cargo rice is f 150 to f 155 ; second ?uality, f 160 to f 165. and white Batavia f 190 to 200, all per koyang of 27 piculs, Rattans : Banjermassing continue scarce at f 13.50 to fl4 per picul ; Jradang readily obtainable at f 6 per picul. Pepper, Black : Pales of Lampong at f 15, and of Bencoolen at f 16 per pioul. Pepper, White: A small sale of Bencoolen is reported at f 32 per picul. Mace : Sales at f3oto f 35 per pioul. Nutmegs : Scarce at f 70 to f 75 per picul. Cloves : Procurable at f2oto f 25 per picul. Pearl Sago : Present Singapore quotation 2.90 dollars to 3 dollars per picul. Freights : We have to report a vety decided improvement in freights. The •L. J. Enthoven' has jtut been fixed at f 47.50 per last, equal to about $2 6s per ton, E. I. Company's conditions, for sugar and coffee to Rotterdam. The supply of unemployed tonnage has diminished very materially. We look for a further advance in freights as soon as produce begins to come to market.
