RUSSELL. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) April 2.

Mr. John MoLeod, of Kaipara, is now at Kawakawa, with a party of men, looting about the coalfield—l suppose with a view to find its extent, &o. — so I hope there may be some prospect of a company taking it in hand. Last -week the steamer 'Beautiful Star' came into this port, with 900 merino «heep, for Mr. John Williams, of Pakaraka. This gentleman *nd his brothers have already very fine flocks, and .their wool and mutton are among the best in the Auckland market. They are certainly doing their best to win and keep a good name for the Bay as a sheep-farming district. Last night the Maoris brought m word that they I had taken Paul, the man of whom I told you in my last, who had kicked another and caußed his death; and this morning Mr. Barstow, R.M., went down to Kawiti, where he was; and this evening Paul is in the lock-up, waiting the arrival of witnesses, when I suppose the case will be gone into. The last whaler left our harbour this morning.
