MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. Daily Southern Cross Office, Friday evening.

The Customs receipts to-day Amounted to £385 19s. B<L There have been two or three auction Bales of consequence during the week. The sale of sugars per the ' Kenilworth,' from the Mauritius, took place on Thursday, and wu well attended. The prices obtained were satisfactory. Messrs. John Roberton and Co. held a sale of groceries and oilmen's stores to-day. It was found itnpoisible to dispose of many articles, and of only a few were the prices what importers would require to make transactions pay. Messrs. Hunter and Co. held their seoond wool sale to-day. There were only about 50 bales, and no clips of importance amongst them. Prices were under those obtained at previous sales, which is to be ascribed in part to the news brought by the last mail. Breadstuff's are unchanged. Timber and gum are very dull, and the arrivals of the latter article have been somewhat less this week.

Messrs. Robetton and Co. held a iale of groceries today, at which the following prices were realised : — Half-boxes sardines, 10s. 6d.; quarter-boxes sar-

dines, 6s. 6d. to 6s. 9d ; half-pint salad 01), 7". 9d. toSs. ; raisios, 7.',(i.; Bell aud Black's plaia vestas, 9s. Bd.; Bell and Black'fi 250, 28m. ; starch, 4|d. to to 4 Jd. ; blue, 6^d to 7<J.; Column's mustard, in tins, 10£ d.; Wotherspoou's confectionery, 10-Jd.; crushed sugar, 5Jd.; currants, 4^d.; carbonate of soda, 2fd. ; walnuts, 4<J.; salmon, 15s. 3d. Messrs. Koberton and Co. also sold to-day the following articles: — Tins, each 141b., No. 1, white lead, 3.^5.; linseed oil, 4s. 9d.; whiting, 6s. 2d, to 6s. 3d. Messrs. Roberton and Co. sold today 530 bags flour (damaged), at £11 7s. 6d. to £11 15s. Messrs. Koberton and Co. sold to day, at Messrs, Schapp and Anaenne'a, Custom-house-street, 50,000 feet kauri boards and soantling, at from 2s. 6d. to ss, Mr. L. W. Eaton seld, to-day, pears, at od. per lb.; grapes, 24d.; apples, lfd. Messrs. Hunter and Co. report that, at their second wool sale, held this day, prices ruled fully Id. per lb. under prerious quotations for all descriptions. Biddings were not so free aa at first sale, ovriog to the tone of the English market, per advices just to hand, being not quite so healthy, None of the lots pitched call for special mention.
