A UCKLAND. Daily Southern Cross office, Friday Evening.
The Customs receipts to-day amounted to £263 13s. lOd. There has been little business doing during the past week. Indeed most of our merchants are, in the present state of commercial matters, rather inclined to be cautious and to restrict their transactions. Wines and spirits are in full stocks. The demand for light wines, general in the early part of summer, has not begun yet. Bottled ale, especially, is largely overstocked, and considerable quantities are being exported to Melbourne. We quote Martell's dark brandy, 7s. 6d. ; pale, Bs. ; Martell's and Hennessey's, per dozen, Is. 9d. ; rum, 3s. 6d. and 3s. 9d. ; 11s. to 11s. 6d accepted for beat brands of ale aud stout. About 60 or 70 tons of gum will be sent to Sydney in the ' Harriet King,' the buyers here being ctowded up. This has had some tendency to keep prices lower.
