There was an unusually large" attendance of meichants aud others, at the ware-rooms ,of Mr. W. J. Young, on the 15th, during the sale by - auction of the Oornwallis Saw-mills, plant, timber, houses, laud, ice, by Mr. D. J. O'Keeffe. Before offering the various properties as advertised, the auctioneer made a brief explanatory statement to the effect that the sale had been publicly notified, under iusttuctions received from Messrs. G. B. Owen and David Kirk wood, the trustees iv the estate of Mr. Roe ; aud he felt that this very valuable property was submitted to the public under peculiar as well as somewhat painful circumstances. The property had been estimated to have cost Mr. Roe, between two and three years ago, £12,000 ; and it was now to be put up for absolute sale for net cash. He was, therefore, much gratified to see such a large attendance of gentlemen representing the commercial interests,, of the-.pro-vince, feeling convinced, as he did, that^ no undue advantage would be taken of the' peculiar position of the estate, and that he would be able to. report after the sale that the merchant^ of Auckland were^prepared to buy property^ submitted absolutely to them for cash in insolvent estate*, aud ' so' enable the creditors to obtain a good and substantial dividend. It might be said that the property h.ad , depreciated, but it appeared to him that the settlers of Auckland had no cause whatever to be cast "down by the present temporary depression of business ; aud he had no hesitation in saying that the 'future of the province would be bright and prosperous. From the opeuing up of communication by Panama with South America *nd the United States, an entirely new era for Auckland might be said to be inaugurated. He might remark further, iv support of hia- statements, that he was glad to observe * thav the Bank of New Zealand occupied such a high position throughout the whole of the financial crisis in England ; and he h.;d no doubt, notwithstanding the existing depression in local cominefce/that the Bauk, as hitherto, would afford every* Veafeouofele assistance to legitimate trade. As indicative of the present value of the property to be offered, ;&e.might remind the gentlemen present that very recently on* of the leading merchants of Auckland' had^purchased the half of a similar establishment* on the East .Coast, for which he had given £5,000. "Mr. ißoe had cut 7,000,000 feet of bush timber, which had produced 5,000,000 feet of timber fit to export,;, and the mill was capable of producing 50,000 feet of -sawn timber per week. There were twenty saw-mills at present at work in the proiince, producing 2,000,000 feet of sawn timber per mouth, at an .average cost for wages alone of between £10,000 and £12,000. At present, therefore, the Auckland sawmills were producing for export', and home consumption^, 000, 000 feet per month ; and .what with immigration and increased building powers, he felt sure that properties of the character he was about to offer could not be affected for any great length of time by the prevailing depression of bade. Both of the trustees were present, and! explained personally, as well as through the auctioneer, to the fullest extent the various details connected with the property, so that intending purchasers present might arrive at a correct estimate of its value, and that the highest sum might be realised on behalf of the creditors. The sale was than commenced. | Mr. J. S. Macf*rlane was the purchaser Of- the mill, logs in creek, aud two leases of bush," for £1,100. Mr. Roe'a residence in Coruwallis and three allotments of land were purchased by Mr. Heron, for £125. Twenty acres adjoining the latter realised £62 ; two cutters, £57 ; feur working bullocks and harness, £44; seven head cattle, £42; three horses and trucks, £12; weather-board office and wharf at Onehunga, £8: stock of provisions, kc., in store adjoiuiug mill, £150 ; book debt?
