NAPIER.
The trade and commerce of the province during the past month has exhibited some slight improvement over the preceding. The shipments of shee;> and cattle to the neighbouring province of Auckland form a very important item of business, and cannot fail to exercise a beneficial influence upon the province generally. "We are glad to see that branch of trade progressing so favourably as it is doing. In other respects, the trade of the port and province ia dull, as at this season of the year must be expected. Stocks continue low, and merchants are not anxious to replenish them until increasing demands justify this courae. The consumption of articles in demand is supplied just as required by shipments from the neighbouring provinces of Auckland and Wellington, and from Sydney and Melbourne. We do not know that any vessel is expected direct from the mother country here at present, but considerable shipments for this province are on board the ships ' Napier' and 'Lizzie Scott,' both of which vessels are long overdue at Wellington ; and tbe receipt of which goods will give some impetus to our trade. We have no alteration to make in the prices quoted for last month. — Times, August 13.
