CANTERBURY.
The Canterbury Press of the 2ud April reports r— The arrival of the 'Cissy' and ' Victory,' from London, with full cargoes, will help to replenish stocki of various articles of which the market was bare ; but present prices will not decline, and we may say that the prices of all English goods are likely to be sustained at full rates. A scarcity still exists in bacon and hams, Sinclair's and Coey'i brands being only held in small quantities. " Cheese is coming to hand more freely, and butter in sufficient lots for home demaud. A considerable quantity of Scotch whiskey, per the 'Victory,' has changed hands at ss. per gallon in bond. A brisk demand for threebushel corn sacks took place during the week, and prices advanced from 18s. to 21s. per dozen, but they are a shade easier again. In the flour market no change has taken place, old and new stauding at lust week's prices. The millers are buying little wheat, and are nominally offering ss. per bushel for the best samples ; a good lot of damaged is quitted at from b*3. to 4s. for pig and fowl feed. Oats are firm at last week's quotation.*, the demand being rather in excess of the supply ; and, should a Westland trade be established overland, this class of horse-feed will no doubt advance. Peas are offeriug freely ; 4s. to 4s. 6d. per buihel aie current rates. Tares are in good demand, and good samples could be readily placed at 7s. 6d. to Ss. for quantities. In potatoes little is doing, prices now standing at £5 per ton for bulk sales. Horses continue to rule low in price, many of the lots offered at auction being obliged to be withdrawn as under reserve* value ; the market, however, is very much overstocked with very inferior cattle, for whenever any well-known stock are offered good prices are nearly always realised. Money is slightly easier in trade, but great caution is still exercised in the discount market, and good paper only will be dealt in,
