THE INQUEST ON THE BODY.
At 12 o'clock, Dr. Goldsbro', the newly-*ppoinfced Coroner for the Hospital and Gaol, assembled a jnry at the Stockade j and, the body having been viewed, the following evidence was taken : — .Joseph Tuck well deposed : lam governor of Mount Eden Gaol. I have Been, the body of James Stack, now lying in the gaol yard. I receired Stack into my custody on Friday, the 9th of March, under
seutence of death, frjra the Supreme Court, Auckland. I was present nt his execution this morniug •t 7 o'clock. 'ihe body was allowed to hang tho usual time, and was taken down aud placed iv the -coffin, as seen by the jury. Thomas Moore Philson, M.D., deposed: I am Provincial Surgeon and mad'cal attendant at Mount Eden Gaol. I was present nt the execution of James Stack this morniug at 7 o'clock. I examined the body after it was let down, and found life to be extinct. The body in the yard is the same body. Henry Colin Balnea vis deposed : I am Sheriff of the province of Auckland. I produce the Governor's warrant, in which he states, " i see no reason to interfere to prevent the law fiora taking its course iv respect of the said James Stack," The warrant is signed by his Excellency Sir George Grey, and countersigned by the Hon. E. "W . Stafford. The document wn received by me at i o'clock p^ga. on the 4th of April, and under the Supreme Court Act, clause 8, I appointed the execution to take place this morning. I was present when the execution took place this morning at 7 o'clock. The jury returned the following verdict : "That James Stack was hanged by the neck until he was dead this morniug, the 7th day of April, 1866, within the precincts of the gaol, in conformity with the sentence passed upon him by his Honor the Chief Justice of New Zealand on the 9th day of March, 1866. That we have seen his dead body now lying in the prison yard. "
We believe that tbe body was taken away from the Stockade on Saturday night at 7 o'clock, aud buried in the Eomati Cathoic Cemetery.
