FIRE AT DEDWOOD.
Ok Saturday morning last, about half past 2 o'clock, a four-roomed dwelling-house at Dedwood, occupied and owned by Mr." J. Mann, wan burned down to the -ground, leaving only the brick chimney and About half of the fence standing. The alarm of tire appears first to have been given by constable Green, irho was on duty in Hobson-street ; and Mr. Com* mistdoner Naughton at once took horse and rode out to the scene of the conflagration. Upon arrival, he found that the inmate* «f the burning house had escaped unhurt, and taken refuge in a neighbour's dwelling ; the only portion of their household goods MT«d from destruction being a few boxes of clothes and some carpenters' tools. Before the house was entirely consumed a few members of the fire brigade put in an appearance ; but from the absence of any great supply of water, and the firm hold which the fire had obtained of the building, it was judged 'tobe f utile to attempt to save the building. Mr. Mann and family are stated to have retired to bed at their usual time on Friday night, but shortly after two o'clock on Saturday morning were' awoke from experiencing a great heat in the bedroom. Mr. Mann at once rose from his bed, and then discovered that the house was on fire ; the blaze passing through the roof of the house, and the bedroom being full of smoke. The home was insured in the New Zealand Insurance Company for £200 by the mortgagee, but Mr. Mann's furniture was not insured.
