ANNUAL EXAMINATION OF THE PUPILS OF THE HEBREW SCHOOL.
The annual examination o£ the pupils of the Hebrew Institute took place at the Mechanics' Institute yesterday; Mr. C. Davis, the President, in the chair. The proceedings opened with a prayer spoken by Master Henry Asher, invoking God's help to enable himself and fellow pupils to successfully pass their ' examination, and beseeching His guidance through life for the whole assembly.^ ' The President then addressed the meeting. He congratulated the friends of the Institute on the very great and satisfactory progress the purils had made ; and said that although the . Institute had only been established two years, yet amongst the children attending it there were some among them who might honestly and fairly be called good Hebrew scholars, many of them chanting the law with Seat proficiency. In concluding, he said: dependent of the aid of God and of teachers, there is one essential aid that I would call for, and that is home culture. Without this aid the effects of all other are almost nullified ; and I t&wefore trust my words will have some weight, aa&that you, the parents, will make this essential bomeTctrtt-ure one of your first cares. The pupila then chaniCithe 29th Psalm, ana spoken by Master^iSsKeesmg.
teachers' endeavours in forwarding youv children in thlTknowledge of the Scripturp s ; and I ara sure that it must be a satisfaction to youto3eethe excellent manner in whic'.i the pupils have gone through their examination, considering that two years ago tlvey tnew nought of the word of God. You are all aware of the difficulties that are always attendant in the instruction of the young ;~yet s in spite of these difficulties, by the help of the Divine Providence, and with the assistance rendered by the president, committee, and teachers (Mr. Louis Nathan, and Misses Isaacs, Elkin, and Nathan), the present satisfactory result has been attained. I do not hesitate to say that ray endeavours would have been almost futile had it not been for the valuable assisfcance"rendered by the ladies and gentlemen I hare named, and I therefore call for an expression of your thanks to them. I must likewise acknowledge the valuable and disinterested assistance rendered by Mr. Isaac Levy, the choir-master. After several pieces had been recited, and hymns sung by the pupils, the President distributed the prizes, addressing a few appropriate words to the happy recipients, congratulating them on their success, and exhorting them to continue the same principles through life. He especially reverted to the excellent reports received from'their teachers of Misses E. Isaacs, Annie Asher, and Minnie Phillips ; and Masters H. Asher, h. Levy, I. Keesing, and E. Marks.
