TURANGA HIGHWAY BOARD.

The meeting held on Tuesday last at Turanga was attended by a large number of ratepayers. As our readers will no doubt be aware, this beautiful and important district is situated between Howick and the Wairoa riven; , and during the latter part of the war its inhabitants were put to great loss and inconvenience. We are glad, however, to find that prosperity is again beginningto return to the', put settlements, and apparently confident in a better state of things arising, the owners of property in the district fcaye cheerfully come forward. and taxed thems.ejves,

for the purpo.se of making local improyementa. Vmt^. believe we are fully justified in atating that what u. called the country interest is looking up ; and we feel mre that when once it is found th»t persons can go on to their land with the certainty of enjoying it in peaca and quietness, there will be no difficulty m introducing a population into this country sufficient to raise that supply of food which we novr import from other places ; the high prices given for wkich will encourage our farmers to sow a large quantity next season. It must be admitted the harvest this summer has been most abundant, and we have heard ot 41/ bushels of wheat to the acre which realised 11s. per bushel. Farmers are famous for grumbling, but they really cannot find fault with such times as these.
