CANTERBURY. January 29.
A fair amount of business is transacted m the ■wholesale line in articles of every day consumption, with an increasing feeling of easiness in the minds of business men as to the stability of the trade which is done. The high rate of general discount also helps to keep trade on a sound basis, and prevents any approach to over speculation. Sugars have arrived in large quantities in anticipation of another rise in the market ; a few other articles are bare until the discharging vessels' stocks come to hand. In the flour and corn market no export trade is at present going on, although stocks of flour are heavier than we ever remember at this «eason. No disposition, however, is evinced by the millers to lower prices from their present standard. Superfine silkdressed, £22 per ton ; Chilian, £23 per ton. Bran and sharps are in good demand at £8 and £8 10s. per ton. Wheat is not offered, and the opening price for new has not beea nettled. New oats are quitted in email lots at 4s. per bushel by masters at prices ranging from is. 3d. to 5s per bushel, according to sample. Barley is not going to be a large crop this season, only a medium breadth being sown. The farmers are very busy at present with their harvest, consequently the -weekly markets are barely attended. Hay is delivered in town at £4 per ton for new, and £5 for old. Potatoes are gradually lowering in price as the season advances, but as no large lots of early ones are quitted, the exact price is difficult to obtaiu ; we may, however, quote new as varying from 12s. to 15s. per cwt. and old from £4 to £5 per toD. No alteration has taken place in the horse and cattle markets, but we expect cattle to be dealt in more freely, as feed will be more abundant in the paddocks after the heavy rains we have had. — Press.
