THE WAIKATO LANDS.

We call attention to a remarkable article from the Wellington Advertiser, on the arrangements come to by his Honor the Superintendent of Auckland with the General Government, in respect of the final settlement of the Waikato lands. It will be seen that the writer congratulates the colony on having made an exceedingly good bargain with this province ; and we are inclined to congratulate it also. We think Auckland, although she did not call the tune, has been forced to pay the piper. However, as the matter cannot be mended now, we suppose the province must do its best to repair the blunders of the General Government, and all others who interfered with, and checked the progress of the settlement, when its success was quite feasible, and actually within reach of accomplishment. It is satisfactory to know that an impartial commission has been appointed to inquire into the questions to be referred to a commission by the express vote of the House of Representatives. Two more competent men than Dr. Kuight and Major Heaphy could not be chosen. Mr. Thomson is likewise well known to many in Auckland as a clear-headed business man, on whose deliberate judgment they could rely. There is a fourth commissioner, whose name is not stated, but the names mentioned are a sufficient guarantee that the choice will be a wise one. We congratulate th« Advertiser on the tone and spirit of his article. It is candid and manly — qualities rarely to be recognised in Wellington newspapers.
