We have been informed by Mr. J. Beaton that he caught iv tlio Waitemata, on Thursday night, a large number of the true li'uropean herring, These are stated to be the fir»t ever caught on the New Zealand coast. They can, it is said, be easily distinguished ftom the New Zealand herring by adepts. Mr. Beaton atoo stales that he has lately caught the true haddock on a certain feeding ground frequented l>y these fish, not far from Auckland. — "Daily Southern Cross," Nov. 18. On Friday last, Mr. J. White, Land« Purchase Commis»ioner, paid over to the Ngatiwkatua natives, owners of the Hole* block, the sum of' £2,ooo, on account of the land purchased for the provin6e by Mr. Kobert Graham, the late Superintendent. The total value of the block is £10,300, and on the negotiations for the purchase being concluded, the £300 were paid as *ecurity for the completion of the bargain. It was arranged that the •ucceeding payments should be made in yearly instalment? of £1,000, and two instalments have thws been paid, — " Weekly News," November 18. ' ' It is announied that Franz Scherff and Charles JR. Walker, both of Auckland, have'made ad application, in accordance with tho Patent* Act, 1860, for, the issue to them of letter* patent for the exclusive vie within the colony of New Zealand of a process for preparing the leaves of the phormiuin tenax. All peisons wishing to prefer any objection to the granting of such letter* patent are requeued to forward to 0.
