MILITARY AND NAVAL.

The Major-General commanding is now on a tour of inspection along the stations on the West Const. lie left Auckland about it foitnight ago, and inspected the Napier detachment of las old regiment, on his way to Wellington. Tlio following is the distribution of the force at present in JN T ew Zealand :— Jtoyal Engineers and lioyal Artillery detachments, at the various military stations of the colony ; Military Train, Auckland and Wanganui ; 12th (2nd), Waikato j 14th (2nd), two companies in Auckland, two companies iv Napier, and the remainder at Wanganui, 18th (2nd). Wangauui; 40th, To Auamulu (Waikato) ; 43rd L.I , T.iraiiiiki; oOth, Wangaiuu ; 57th, Taranaki ; OSt.li L 1., Tauranga and Wanganui ; 70th, Taranuki and Wanganui. The ships 'Ida Zeigler ' and ' Siam ' have been chartered for the transport of H.M. 70th Regiment to England. Tins regiment is to sail in January. The 70th is to bo succeeded by the 2nd battalion of the 12th Jtegimont, at present stationed in the Waikato. This will still further reduce the strength of tlie military forces in Waikato, without doing jnuch good in Taranaki or Wanganni, where there are at present strong detachments of the I4ch and 08th L 1., and the full strength of the 18th, 43id LI., 50th, 571h, and 70th. Iho late Government of Mr, Weld proclaimed tho Taranaki and Wanganui war at an enti, but they took no steps to remove tho troops ; and the Major-General commanding does not seem (o think the 70th can be removed without replacing them by withdrawing the 12(h from Waikato. The only ship of war in harbour is lI. M. s. ' Esk,' Captain Luce. The * Curugoa,' Commodore Sir William Wiseman, Bart., was reported to leave Sydney early for Now Zealand, by way of Norfolk Island. Jl M. s. 'Eclipse' lelt Auckland recently for Wellington, via the East Coast ; H.M. s. ' Brisk' ia in iSj'daey ; and II.M. s. Falcon is on a cruise.
