SEIZURE OF A STILL AT PAPATOITOL— ARREST OF TWO MEN.
Mr. Tabuteatt and Mr. Hewson, of the Customs, with Sergeant-Major Wolloy, arrived at Papatoitoi, where they had information that illicit distillation vru going on, at an early hour yesterday morning. About two miles past Burton's, in a secluded gully, they came upon a whare, situated close to a creek. Within the whare they found two men, about 330 gallons of wort, and several barrels. Outside the door wu a still and a worm. Tho officers immediately spilt the wort, anddestroyed tho barrels and ihe whare. The two men, and the worm and still* were brought into town. The still is copper, of good workmanship, and it capable of holding about 60 gallons. The Distillation Prohibition Ordinance declares that any proceeding taken under it mn*t be by information and summons, and does not authorise the keeping in custody . any parties >wbo may have been found in possession of illicit distilling apparatus. An information wa« laid on arrival of the officers by Mr. Mills, Collector of Customs, against — McClough, alias McKeod, alias Hall, and against — Daly, alias Connellan, for having been guilty of a breach of the Distillation Prohibition Ordiuance, by having in their possession a still for distilling spirits at Papatoitoi. Summonses to appear to answer the charge on Friday were made out on the information, and given to the men.
