GENERAL ELECTION.
The first election address which ha« come to hand it from Colonel DeQuincey to the ' .electors r of the Pensioner Settlement*, and appears in our advertising columus. We are glad that the, gallant Colontfl has come forward as a candidate. Ho is in every way qualified to represent the Pensioner 'Settlements in | the General Assembly ; a'nd, as an 1 Auckland settler, 1 the interests of the province will be safe in hia hands, 'We know that Colonel De Quincey ji an earnest Separationiat. It is not at all likely that his return will be contested. Mr. Wm. Mason, the present member, being poimanently established ( in business in Dnnedin, of which city he is Mayor, will not seek for * renewal of the confidence of the electors ; but ' will, in all likelihood, obtain a seat for one of the Otago electoial districts. This clears the way, therefore, for the undisputed return of the gallant gentle* man who, now addresses the electors of the Pensioner Settlements. With regard v to the 1 , other constituencies of the province, it is, perhaps, premature to speak. We may, however, remark that we have been informed that his Honor the Superintendent ' Will be prepared to take his seat iv the General Assembly, where his great talents and experience in publio affairs will be exerted in the cause of the province. A seat must, therefore, be found for him. Indeed this ii an absolute necessity, for without Mr. Whitaker " the Auckland phalanx" would be incomplete. Most of the old members will offer themselves for re-election. There is no time, however, to be lost; and the constituencies of the province ought to set before themselves the task of obtaining the very best men they can select, whether these chance to be new men or not. At the present crisis, personal feeling ought to be laid aside, and gentlemen selected to represent the provinoe solely on account of their fitness. Of the fituess of Colonel De Quincey we have no doubt, and therefore we should be gratified to see him elected.
