GARRISON HUNT.

According to announcement, the meeting of the Garrison Hunt took place yestonlay, between Hillsboro and the Pa Farm, near the Bluff, Onoliunga, and the van was capit.il iv every respect. A drizzling ruin, which would have thrown a "wet blanket" over any other kind of sporti, was not noticed on this occasion in the field, as it did not ■poil the scent or tin fences. Major Baker and Mr. Rait officiated as master and whip, and mustered the following hounds :- Captain Stone, Mr. Itobin■on, 40th; Mr. Cox, s"th ; Mr. Howaid, GSth; and Mr. T. Matraver§, who started the game shortly after three o'closk, and ran over a splendid bunting country, which would have cheered tha heart of the mo9t onthmiastio foschuuter in old lSngUnd. The paper had been laid by Mr. Appleton and Mr. Robinson over a number of small farms, and the "wholesome" four- rail fences and scoria walls were not at all diminished to suit timid riders. The course took an almost oircular direction at first, and on coming near the startingplace the field and the nnmorons mounted spectators thought the hounds were gone to kill, and crowded in to see the death, but the hounds went off again, took another course, and finished after a run of more than seven milci. The "spills" weio pretty uumerous, but not at all severe, and it might be »aid that they rather added to the enjoyment of all pmtie*. There was a good attendance of settlers and gentlemen from town, and c >ren the workers in the hay fields and barn-yards crossed seemed to enjoy the spoit. Several naval officers ran thocouwo, who stnek on to their horses like " bricks," and were well up at the death. On the whole, a splendid day's sport was had. We may, however, here give a caution to enthusiaits, who display frequently a disposition to outrun the hounds, and then «ay they could not hold in their horse*. One or two " colonists" erred in this respect yesterday, who will doubtles* take better care next time. The promoter* of the Hunt value it greatly at having been the moans of bringing the offioer* of the garrison into friendly communication with the settlers around Auckland, and theie, on the other hand, may show their good will by attending the meets, when they will have the beßt of sport in the best of company.

The bazaar iti aid of the building fund of the Orphan Home, St. Stepheu's, it announced to be held in January next, and for which contributions in work, material, or money will be thankfully received by the committee of ladies, whoie names will be found in an advertisement in another colnmn. M. Rupffer, the eminent director of the Observatory of Bt, Petersburg, died recently. Mrs. Cobden has gratefully declined a proposal made by Government to grant her a pension of £1,500 per annum, in recognition of ,My. Cobden'a clistinguished publio services,
