A MARKET-HOUSE FOR AUCKLAND.

To tlio Editor of tlio Duly Southbun Ckosi, Sin, — Ne.uly another year has passed away, and still our citizens and couutry settlers are at the mercy of middlemen, who airauge the prices for pioduce ; the consumer and pioducer being uuable to deal direct with e'aeli other owing to there not being any maiket-house. It is woll knowa that £14,000 was voted by the Council for this purpose, but accouling to Mr. Macready's explanation at a late Bo.ird meeting, tlie Government will not pay over the mouey for the purpose intended ; preferring to lanuch out into such in utilitarian and unproductive w«iks as the Supreme CourL-housp, &c. At the next meeting of the Council we ti ust that some understanding will be come to in the matter. If the Government object to pay over the money for the purpose it was voted for, then let it at least put the City Board in a position to build a Market house by passing a MaikctDebentnio Act, authorising it to pay for the building by debentiues, which the Act should make a legal tender; and the Boaid could call in and pay off a ceitain number of the debenture* annually out of the moneys they would receive from the tent of stalls and stands in the Maiket. Tlie Market-house of St. Helen's; Jersey, was erected in a somewhat similar manner, so that this it no new untried scheme, and the Aucklanders should be as able to carry it out as the Jerseyites. If it is asked what is to be done with the £14,090 already voted ? why, let it be used iot opening up the country with roads. The North has long been piomised a main road, and it might well be u->ed on that, as Bouaewbftt of a set-off against what is being expended for the Drury Kailway, and on roads to the southward. The town languishes, and will continue to do so, as long as persons are unable to go ou to their laud for want of roads. The couutry must be settled ere its resources will be developed, or it can become au exporting country. It is a pity there in not more unity between the town and the countiy, or that they do not seem to understand better that they hive a common interest in the prosperity 6f the 'province of Auckland. If We' would see Auckland e(o ahead of its neighbouring provinces, it must be united, as the members it sent to Wellington were, and. the result will bo as satisfactory.- -i am, <fee, Unity.
