NEW ROMAN CATHOLIC CHAPELS.
Two Roman Qatliplic oh»peli are, at present; being erected in the neighbourhood of Auckland, of which we subjoin short notices, ' ' ' The largest of these is being built on a site About fifty yard* to the north of St. Mary's Convent, and its primary purpose is to afford accommodation for the religious seWioes' in 'connection "with the convent, with which it is to be joined by a corridor. The style of 'the' chapel will be Gothic; and 'the shape cruoiform, with a belfry and spire rising from the centre of the building. The spire is to be surmounted with a cross, the top of whioh will be 68 feet from the ground. There will be three "entrances o the chapel— a large 1 'door' in* the centre audj'jtwp,' .ismaller 1 onesr 'at the\ .sidei^from New-street, which 1 'runs down at • the back of th» Convent from College-street to ! the Waiteinatn. 1 From the' position, of the Wilding,- it- will be- seen from the more elevated'itreets in' the city, and from the wharf and harbour. The extreme length) of the buildiugiWitt be 60 feet; and the extreme .width 50 feet, with walls 16 feet high, strengthened >.with buttresies. < i .Owing ' to icliapeli beiug designed ■■ specially for the religious services of the Convent, the interior arrangements jare somewhat (different from what they are. in ordinary 'Roniau Catholio plaoes of worihipr I 'The 55 aHar," whioh ii at the eastern end of the building and faoing the prinoipal
eutnnce, i« Advanced into the body of tlie ohapel to fur m to leave room for two sacristies, one a robingroom for the priest*, and th« other for the use of the Sisters ■of Mercy. The choir, into whioh the corridor from the Oonvent enter*, trill be fitted up with forty Gothic stall* for the accommodation of the Sitters ; oue of the tranaept* will be for the use of the boarders in the institution, and th* other for the orphan* being oared for there.' A portion of the'na^e wilt be reserved for any persons who may wish to attend torvico. The ohapel will bo lighted with liaudiome windows, corresponding with the general design of the building ; ana at the east end, over the altar, will be a roio window, which i* to be filled in with stained glass. The corridor will have small Gothio window* facing the east, It is estimated that about 200 person* will be accommodated at 'service;' but as the chapel is detigued for a special purpoie, the furnishing of a large amount of accommodation has not been made the priuoipal object in planning the interior. The site of the second olmpel is in the Roman Cathalic Cemetery close to Upper Syraonds street, and nearly opposite the Episcopal Chapel of St. Sepulchre's. It is intended, in the meantime at leaat, to vie the chapel only for mortuary services, and the interior will not be fitted up with pews. The plan of this chapel it alfo Gothic, hut somewhat differently carried out from the cbnpel at St. Mary's. In thi* case the spire, the top of which will be about 57 feet from the ground, will riie from the front of the building, and immediately under it will be the organ loft. The only entrance will bo by a door in the eastern end, above which will be a rose window with stained glass. The extreme length of the building will be 51 foot, and its width 33 feet. Both of these chapels are being erected from deaigns furnished by Mr. Edward Mahouoy, architect, Wellington-street.
