MAKETU. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
February 24. Nothixg very particular since my last. Rumours of wnr are 3till afloat, but I beliovo have no foundation. Il is said that a now pa has been constructed at Cnnar.n by icbels, and it nas fancied by sonic! tbat n white flag could be feen fljing tbeie. It is Tory questionable whether it was a flag or not, the opinions on the subject being divided. The Tnuianga E C priest, who passed through beie a day or two since, en route to Rotorua, slated tlint lie saw a mob of lebel nalivcs, estimated by him to be about 200, at Mannpakawa, on the line of road between Tnuiangn nud Mnketu, but afterwards I asceitnined tbat it was simply a party of (en Mnorics who weie out looking for horses. On the lcceipt of the fust infoimotion we began to consider the affair looked seiious, and that the overland road between Mnkelu and Tnuianga would be stopped, and that, it would pietent the conveyance of mails between the two places, but, fortunately foi n% the talo had no foundation. The Maones here, fiom their notions, seem to tlnnl. that it is advisable to take every precaution, and the inhabitants of both pns during tho last week ba^e been very busy strengthening their defence?, by scarping, building parapets, &c.
