Superintendent's Office, Auckland, March 10, 1865.
Sir, — Iti (he absence of the Governor and of any member of the General Government, nuclei- the present exigency of the moment, it becomes the duty of the Piovineial Government to afford you all possible aid in fmtlierauce of your endeavours to lescue Mr. Grace aud the other captives from the hands of the Pai Maiire natives. I think it not unlikely that by aii appeal to the honour of some of the loyal natives, you may succeed in your object ; but as a further lesoiuco, aud if, in the exercise of your own judgment, you should deem ifc advisable, 1 authorise you to offer among the friendly natives a rewaul of one thousand pounds for the rescue of the capth e<s, and placing them iv safety. I guarantee the amount on the pait of the Piovincial Government, in the full confidence that the expenditure will be sanctioned by the General Government, who, doubtless, would have acted as I have dove, had they been represented in Auckland. — I have, &c. , (Signed) Eobeet Gbaham, Supeiiutendent The Rev. S. Williams " Auckland.
