They hivvo been bioughfc in eight shins— five from the Capo, and three from the 'United Kingdom. About 330 statute adnlis have been permanently located on tlieir land. Those who an ived by the 'Steinwrerder' have been settled at Whiriwhiii, and the, immigrants ,by the 'Alfied' at "Vyaipiui — both places beiiig" in the Wamlcu district. They ha,ve been busily engaged in making prepaiations for building themselves houses in ; anticipation of tho approaching winter. , The , next vessel that arrived was the 'Maoii,' which brought 270 statute adults, who havo boeu temporarily located at Drury. and arefemployed iv road-making. "' "It 'is -prov posed to -locate /a number of itninigrants at - Wairoa, after the claims of fiiendly natives to' r a portion of the land shall have been^ investigated, by Mr. Macky,\Native Commissioner, who has been appointed for that purpose by the Superintendent of " the Council. The Wairoa is considered a very desirable place for the location of a number of immigrants, as the land is good; and will afford^ protection to the settlers already resident; there. It is intended to place the whole of t tHe immigrants, as soon 'as possible on .their lands, and the necessary _snrveys' are being made for that' purpose.' ' Officers have also • been appoiute'd to superintend the 'immigrants in their roadworks, and to'keep accouuts of the work performed. It beiiig the policy, of "the ' Provincial Government to locate the immigrants in the settled . distiicts, where they c*nj, mosrireadily obtain employment, it is not ,' contemplated to take any of tho3e who , have ivlresTdy nrrived across the "Waikato, but we understand that, in untici- _ pation of a Urge number of immigrants to arrivo, about 1,800, in five ships, the advices of which have been received, application has been made to the Geueral Government for some of the, confiscated terlifcoiy on the other side of the^ Waikato river ; but no leply has as yet been received.
