DEATH OF MAJOR HER FORD.
Another gallant officer, Major Ilerford, of the 3rd Waikati Militia, who was conspicuous for his braveiy at Oiakau, has gone to his Jast home, having i lied on Tuesday night, ab a quarter |«sl nine o'clock at his residence, Otalmhu. Tt will he recollected that while gallantly engaged in the attack on Oiakanpa, Majoi (then Captain) Herford vr.w bhot in the eye, and that for some tune his iecovery was deemed hopeless. Under careful medical treatment, and with the kind offices of Mis. Herfovd, who went up from Auckland, and devotedly attended her hnsbaud at To Awainutn, duiing Ids tijing illness, he soon hecame sufficiently convalescent to he leinovcdto « 'tahulm, and he subsequently visited Auckland.
