THE GREAT NORTH ROAD.
A meetino of pernoui interested; in the repair of Ibo Groat North Road was held yesterday Afternoon, at Mr. Edgecombo's, Northern note]. Mr. Motion was in the chair. , Mr. Sansom said he had been induced to call the meeting to comidcr in w hat manner the £100 voted by the Provincial Council for the immediate repair of the Great North Road should bo expended. Mr. McCacl snid that he had long been sin prised at the apathy displayed by the settlers nn that road, by their having so loug permitted the road to 'remain in hucli k dangerous itate as it thon was, without taking measures to remedy it. It wai bin opinion that the dangerous pieces of scoria on the load should bo knocked off, and the holes lilted , in, and that, in fact, thu whplo toad, so far as Hmdemoii and Macfailaue's mill should b<> piopeily fwmed and metalled. Tlio meeting would cotiudor whether tho money Bhould bo expended on tho old road or a new one. Mr. Cabman stated that as tho money had boon voted for the purpose of filling up tho dangerous holes in thu old road, mentioned in Mr, McCaul's petition, tho sum could not fail ly be used foi any other piuposo. Mr. MoEmvain suggested that as it had been shown by previous speakers that ropaiiing tho old road and bridges, and cutting down Aich-hill, would cost, without metalling, at least .£6OO, it would be more advisable to foiin tho road by Mount Albert ; a petition for which had been sent in to a pievioua Counoil. Tho particular advantages of that road were that it could be mado at a far loss cost, the road being nearly level, and only one bridge required. Mr. CADSfAN was of opinion that that the road mentioned by Mr. McElwain was the beat line, and would ultimately become tho road most used ; but tvt the settlers on the North Road had purchased land abutting thereon on account of its being the trunk road, it should not be neglected. After some desultoiy conversation, tho following' resolutions were carried unanimously :—: — Ist. Proposed by Mr. Sansome, seconded by Mr. Edoecombe, " That a committuo be appointed to meet Mr. Allright, to consult as to the most judicious means of spending the £100 granted by tho Council; said committee to consist of Messrs. McCaul, Thomas, and the mover." 2nd. " That a committee, consisting of Messrs. Edgecombe, Caley, Motion, Thomas, White, and the mover, be appointed to diaw np * petition to tho Provincial Council with legard to tho impoitauce of iuipioviug tho Groat North Jtoad. 1 ' A vote of thanks to the Chairman and Mr. Cadman for his kindness in attending the meeting, closed the proceedings.
