September On the i til iustant, the Kjngitoß in this locality, hoisted their fliigs in commemoration of Matutaera's accession to tho Kingship. Deputations from the Ngatahni'a and Ngatiawas were present, including \Vi Tako, who the day previous was escorted by an armed force preceded by a color red and white with a red ci oss. A day or two before the hoisting of the colors a circular was sent to the English residents iufotWmg them that it was a meie piivate affair, and that in consequence they ihould not be alarmed. In consequence of the boisterous state of the weather the ceteinony did not take place with »uch eclat as lwtlwito; in. the evening speeches were made; mnny advocating the desirability of proceeding at once to Kauijitikei to pull down the stockade now in course of erection at that place, others were immediately f«r going to Wellington to commence operations. An armed party U now ptunaneutly stationed at the flagstaff. A notice lins been issued by the King's i uimugn, cautioning all tiavellera from proceeding' inland at Waikanae and PaiUakaraka, the site of tho flagntuff, Otaki, after one o'clock p m. Immediately on receipt of the sail intelligence of tho minder of Mr. Rayner at Ranjjitlkei, Tamihana Te Ruupaiaha, with \m uni*l alacrity, convened a meeting on Monday, at which the Kiuyitei attended with their tinned force. The object of the meeting waa to ascertain the feelings of the native 3. Tamahann m a most able speech explained to them the evil that would ensue if they attempted to pievent the tumderer or murderers fiom being brought to justice, be they Maoris, half castes, ov white men. It ii gratifying to state that the Kingitts fully coinc'nlcil with him, and they came to the deteimination of giving up the muideieror tmuderers as they did not want that name — " inuiderer" —to attach to them.
