GUIDES FOR THE BUSH. To the Editor of the Daily Southern Cross.

Sir, I need not attempt to prove how important it is to have good guides in a country such as this, and how wise it would be to have these guides at hand. Only the other day a number of ti ops started off from Druiy bound for Piikekoho, but having no guide, they j ambled as far as the Mauku. What a case had they been specially wanted in the foimer place ! On Monday, being in the c.unp, I obseived that there was a great enquiiy for a gnidu t« Burlt's house, as well as to the stockade at Pukekohe I believe Captain Tnman started off without a guide. Fortunately he did not mistake the road. Hud lie done so the results might have been of a senotib character. An expedition is going out this morning, consisting^ the "flying column," a detachment of the "Defence Foice," &c. They aro about to scour the bush and get out the cattle. I am afraid this force is not provided w ith propei guides, as they ought to bo. It is not to be supposed that the men will be kept matching on the road through the district they aie about to scour. They will have to penetrate into the foiest and continue their \ march through poihaps for miles. In such a case there is absolute need foi guides. And theiearc men who know this distnct thoroughly, and who would gladly enlist into acoips of guides * I call the attention of the authorities to this subject;, believing it to he of the utmost importance. — Yours, &c., SETTLBn. Drury, September 17th, ISG3.
