Tr.NDni«i for the pei foi mance of woiks on tbcioati between Paninuic and Oraliuhu will be lcceived by the Highway Ti ustees of the Panmiue District, until 12 o'clock of tins day. NwUi Vou;.\inn;s. — Ageneial meeting of the Auckland Naval Volunteers is advertised to be held tin-, evening, at half-past seven o'clock, pieciscly, w hen the enrolment of members, and other important business -\wll be tiansacted. Hides of the Company will be presented to mcmbcis at the meeting. Cutiomo Bam ah.— The fancy lmxar at the Odd Follows' Hall, in aid of the oiphanage of St. Maiy'.s Convent, was continued yesterday ; but the weather again piovcd most inauspicious and until evening very few poisons attended. We believe, however, before the bazaar was closed foi the night <a veiy satisfactoiy amount of business had been tiansacted. The bazaar will be continued this day, to commence At the usual hour. St. Andruw's M \xsr. B i/.aar. — The Committee of Management announce that the fancy ba/aar in aid of the St Andrew's M.vise Fund w ill be opened this day, in the Btunswiok Music Hall ; when in addition to contiibutions made by those inteiested in the object in Auckland, and elsewhere in New Zealand, others of gieat vaiictyand value, which have been received from ft lends in Scotland, lieland, England, and India, will be ottered for sale. It is therefmc hoped that the ba7aar generally will be moie than usually atti active. Keves's Rri'f Compvny. — Yesterday afternoon an extraordinaiy meeting of the shareholders of Kevon's Keef Gold Mining Company was held at the offices, Qucen-sticet. There was a modoiate attendance of shareholder. The meeting had been convened to consider the desirability of increasing the capital of the Company by £1,000 steiling, but after considerable discussion it was decided to defer any further call on the shareholder^ ; the present drive to be continued as at present being woiked. Mr. Dacre occupied the chair. Great Barrick Company — This company's harbour of Pint .Fit/.ioy is considwed by competent persons to be by far the most convenient for the New Zealand poi t of call for the proposed line of steamen between England and Austiaha via Panama, which is again been agitated in the colony. "We un derstand New South Wales lias voted a subsidy of £50,000, and New Zealand £30,000 per annum. Sir. Ciosbie Waid, the Poitmistei-Geneial of tin 1 latter colony, has just arrived in this country, charged to make a enntmet in association with the agent of New South Wales for a monthly postal seivice, tin Panama, and there would, therefoie, appear a stiong probability of the jnoject being ciriied out Poifc Fit/ioy is pronounced to be one of tbe finest harbours in the world ; it is peifeetly easy of access, and its selection would save at least 100 miles as computed with Auokland, besides other inconveniences. It is in the ilnect line of route. — Mmmg Joutnal Jan 26. Emigration to Austral v.— (Morniwj Post.)— Those who, whether in Great Britain or elsewhere, should feel desiious of emigiating to Australia, may rest confident that they will find many millions of acres of land, in every way fitted for agricultural purposes, tluown open to their selection at the tiifling cost of £1 an acre. The settler who has £20 maj' at once secuio a farm of torty acres, and pay the remaining £20 by eight annual instalments. He must be piepared, however, to sin round it with a fence, to erect a habitation, and to cultivate, or have cultivated for him, within a year after taking posiession, at least one tenth of its area. Of his purchase money he will have the satisfaction of feeling that one-half will be expended on the roads communicating with his district, and that one-fourth will be added to a fund established for the pui poses of promoting immigration. He will also possess the light of nominating any relatives or (skilled labourers in Great Biitain, ami on payment of £& for every adult male, and ££ for eveiy adult female, secure their passage to the colony. Although in the first instance no settler can become owner of a greater extent of land than six hundred and forty acres, yet he is at liberty in each succeeding year to acquire other allotments to the same extent. In each agricultural aiea a section of one equate mile in extent will be reserved for public purposes, such as the erection of churches, com ts, post office*, &c , and as soon as oneeighth of an area has been (elected, tbe Governor in Council is empoweied to grant double that quantity of land as commons for those rciident within the areo, and when one-fourth has been selected the remaining tbree-fourtbi will be thrown open on the same tei ma. Every opportunity will thus be afforded to the settler* of obtaining ample pastuiage for their cattle. With such extraordinary facilities presented for the acquisition of land it is impossible to doubt that the tido of emigration to Au«tr*lia must be vastly increased. There are thousand* in this country who would gladly leavn it if they could only feel »ati«fled that an open field and fair opportunity wero afforded thorn of earning an iudependence in a foreign country. To onr mind that field and that opportunity are now afforded in Victoria. The emigrant who goes to Australia, not to dig in gold mine* with tbe hopes of becoming suddenly rich, but to till his own ground by tho swei»t of his brow, will not be destined, a* to many of tho goW.seeker* have been, to return to his unlive land in disappointment
