NAVAL AND MILITARY.
Since our last summary 100 men of the Royal Artillery, under Captain Mercer, R.A., have gone to Taranaki, as have also detachments from the 65th and 70th regiments. The Royal Artillery now in Taranaki are transformed into an irregular cavalry corps, of 100 sabres, to which are added the Colonial Defence Corps (motmted) under command of Colonel Nixon, strength unknown. The 70th regiment is principally in Taranaki, under the command of Lieut. -Colonel Chute, the head : quarters being at the camp, Otahuhu. A" detachment is at Otago. The 65th head-quarters are at the camp, Otahuhu ; and detachments from that regiment garrison the Queen's redoubt at Maungatawhiri on the T/Vaikato, and form part of the reinforcements at , Taranaki. The 40thgarrison Auckland. • The 14th are at the camp Otahuhu ■ (head-quarters), and in garrison at , Wellington and Napier, The o,7th are stationed
in Taranaki (head quarters), and Wanganui. The 57th also occupy the redoubt at Waireka, Tavanaki, built by them ; and the remaining forces there are variously disposed at the roads and in commanding positions. The naval force in the New Zealand waters consist of H.M. s.s. 'Harrier,' 17 guns, Commander Sullivan, which has done good service to the colony ; and H.M. s. sloop ' Eclipse,' Commander Mayne, which lias recently arrived from Sydney. The ' Harrier,' on her return from Taranaki, is to take the Sydney station, in the room of H.M. s.s. ' Miranda/ 15 guns, Captain Jenkins, which is laid up with rot. The 'Pioneer' proceeds to England divested of her armaments. The Russian Imperial Corvette, ' Bogytan,' 18 guns, bearing the flag of Rear- Admiral Popoff, is at Sydney. She took the lieges of Melbourne by surprise, having come to an anchor in the harbour before a salute could be fired from the battery. This vessel is 2,000 tons burthen and 300 horse power.
