BANK RETURNS.

ASSETS AND LIABILITIES DURING THE QUARTER ENDED DECEMBER 31, 1802.

Theso returns give us ab a glance the monetary position of tho Colony. The following result is arrived at, as the dealings of the three Banks doing business in New Zealand for the last quarter of 1862 :-

The reverse of this was the case at the quarterly balances in June and September. The excess of deposits over discounts at the end of the Juno quarter was £124,365 IK 7d. The Government and commercial deposits fell off in the December quarter and the discounts increased. There was a falling-off also in the amount of Government deposits, on the quarter, as contrasted with the June quarter, of £14.733 16s. We find the following to have beeu the state of general deposits for the quarter under review :—: —

This shows that there is nearly a million sterling of invested capital lying at the banks, bearing interest, to the credit of depositors. Since June the balance of deposits bearing interest has slightly increased : at the end of the June quarter the amount was £943,155," as against £967,924 in December. These returns show that New Zealand is steadily maintaining her position as a mercantile country, and enable us to congratulate the proprietors of our local banks upon the extraordinary amount of business it appears to have transacted in the period under review.
