THE VOLUNTEERS.

To the Editor of the Daily Soutkei » Oron. Sin, — From the letter that appeared in tho " Southern Crois," on Saturday, December 13th, 1862, signed " Jacob Bryan," and the lesult of the deficient meetings, held lately on the volunteer movements, proves that theie is mutiny in the camp, and to expect to organise or bring to order the different companies under their present divided opinions would be iinpostible. If we are to have a volunteer body let \n nave one with the spirit and sense that the word implies. Rules and iegul*tions formed after a body is organised is absmd, as those rules are carried by a majority ; the minority, therefore, are under tho surveillance of tho majority, who, perhaps may not have the mean*, resources, and the true spirit of the neces•ity of; a volunteer foico for the home we have adopted, for ourselves, our wives, and our children ; for, unfortunately, there avo too many in this colony (as in otlien)' looking to their mother country for support, M the prodigal looks to his parent for remittances (or the mail). The volunteers as they now stand cannot possibly exiat, and to»call out the militia would be a reflection upon the colony and would cause many to leave tho province, and among thoso remaiuing there would be a spirit of discontent The only course, therefore, that is now open to the Government is to disband tho present volunteer force, cancel all present

rule* and regulations!, frame fresh one* with the spirit and liberality they are dono at home and in other provinces, and, if we are to have volunteers, let us have volunteers in the tine senne of the word — men that will coufonn to the rules they know of and subscribed to, and who are always ready to do — " their duty." I am, &c , Unity,
