THE AWA ROA CREEK VERSUS THE TRAMWAY.
'2*o ife Editogpqf tJie SoxUltern Cross. Sir,— As? theMaungatftwhirinns are in ecstacics about the great road that is to join Waikato with Auckland, ,it bgdomes us to -say a trifle about Waiuku, : — The position of this place with the Manukau, whence a t;reek flows, and washes the banks of the township of Waiuku, must always give it an advantage over land c*rriag«— the only obstacle 'to cheap transportation being tlie Awnroa-r-and a few locks on this river (bugbear, as it has been interestingly called) would convey produce much cheaper than the ci-devant giant road ; and no land carriage can compete with water, in a young country where government is too cautious, and companies too weak to construct and maintain in repair a railway. Some time ago, a gentleman of relation to Maungatawhiri, did not blush to say that it cost as much to convey produce from Maungatawhiri to Waiuku, -as it Was worth in the Auckland market. Now, on the contrary, a flat bottomed river boat, drawing about fouiteen inches of water, would bring wheat this distance, to the mouth of the Awaroa, in a few hours, at about one penny per bushel. — I am sir, yours truly, Agricola. February sth, 1862.
