COMMERCIAL SUMMARY.

The transactions during the month of November weie in excess of the dealings ia the pievious month ; but there was, notwithstanding, a hesitancy observable on the part of buyers, and which will not enthely disappear until perfect confidence lias been icstored. So long as there is a chance of hostilities commencing, the traders on the coast will not buy except to meet pressing necessities, and we are aware that sevoial large houses in the city have had their business curtailed on that account. Neither do the natives buy. But while these causes retard operations by persons at a distance, they do not extend- to this immediate neighbourhood. The credit of the mercantile and tiadnig classes ia good; ami although heavy demands weie made lait month in many quarters, we have not heard of a single instance in which a tradesman was unable to meet his engagements. 1 There has been considoiable aetlvityin shipping during the past month.- The 'Black Eagle,' from London brought a heavy cargo, and a large number of passengers. Besides this immigrant ship theie have boon several vessels fioin Newcastle and Sydney, with coals and oargoes of general merchandise; two craft's anived

from the islands with fruit and tropical produce ; four of our own fleet of coasteis returned from Otago, and the sftme number took their departure thence, carrying principally cargoes of timber, which is in demand in the South. A whaler belonging to New Bedford, also put into thia port; and the 'Mersey ' fiom Kaipara, with spars, timber, gum, and bark arrived. She will take her final depai fcure hence on this day (the stli). The ' Northumberland,' first wool ship of the season, is taking in cargo for her return voyage to England. Real estate did not come largely into the market since our last summary ; but what was quitted fetched high piices. City allotments are rising steadily in value ; countiy lands dull of sale, and little offering. ' Beef and mutton maintained their price steadily during the month. Store cattle is rising in value, chiefly owing to the forward state of the pastuiea, and the promising aspect of agiicultmal affairs. Breadstuffs are still a glut in the maiket; and as large stocks are advised to airive, the present depressed state of business may be looked upon as certain for some time to come. the requhements of the country, is giown, but the causes for this are stated in another column. The stocks of soft goods and diapery are large. Tliera was a fair retail trade during the past month, but no heavy transactions took place. Rice is scaice and in request, and fair prices are given. Oilmen's atoiea are in good supply, except pickle*, which aie sought after. Tobacco is a heavy stock, but no transactions took place, beyond what was lequired for the retail trade. It is still quoted high. Sugar is a heavy stock • tea is held in large quantities. Liquids are i» demand, but the supply is good, and dealings are a little freer. We do not alter quotations. Draught and bottled beer and porter aic in quick consumption. There are heavy stocks of ironmongeiy on hand, and moie to anive. Rough iron is not much in demand. Nails are becoming a little scarce, but the demand is not large. Coals aio more plentiful and cheaper. Timber is in steady demand. The trade sales for tho month will give a general idea of current rates. We quote the following reports :—: — An important trade sale was held by Messrs. D.
