COMMERCIAL.

Sydney, Sept. 14. — Business during the week lias been more active, notwithstanding the races, which generally interfere to some extent with trade. There have been some large transactions in spirits, wines, and sugars. The sad loss of the ' Sovereign of the Seas,' by fire, with a valuable cargo of merchandise, has been the principal event of the week, and may cause an improvement in the value of some articles. The non-arrival of the English mail has caused some surprise, as her news, especially with regard to the July wool sales, is looked for with great anxiety. Flouk. — The market is decidedly firmer, although prices at present do not rule any higher. Adelaide flour is worth from £16 10s. to .£l7 per ton. The millers' quotations are the same as last week, viz, fine flour, £17 per ton; seconds, £15 per ton. Wheat is also firmer, and Adelaide is worth 6s. 6d. per bushel ; colonial, 6s. Liquids. — Brandy is firm, notwithstanding the news of sales having been made at a lower figure in Melbourne. Martell's is worth from lls. 3d. to 11s. 6d. Rum, 30 0.p., has been bought up on speculation, at from 3s. lOd. to 45., and holders are now asking a higher price ; 1 10 o.p. is in limited demand, and quoted at 3s. 2d. to 3s. 3d. Geneva is a little more in request, and some large sales of first brands of low strengths and small quantities, have been > made at 13s. 6d. Ale in bulk is moderately firm, and first brands move off steadily at from : £7 15s. to £8. Porter in bulk is very dull, and Taylors is nominally quoted at £6 to £6 ; 10s. Bottled ale and porter are in fair request > at from 9s. 6d. to 10s. for parcels of half ale and half porter. In wines there has been a fair amount of business this week. Good sherries have been quitted at full rates. Port— tow < qualities are no better, but good port is in demand at improved prices. i Teas are firmer, and good congous are rather 1 scarce, and command from £7 to £8 per chest. l Our stocks of common teas are, however, still veiy heavy, and sales are with difficulty ' effected. I. Sugars are firm, and sales of Mauritius I sugars have been made at an advance in the prices realised last week at auction. The prices

range as follows : — Dark to yellow, £38 to .£43 ; yellow to lighu, £43 to £45 ; crystals, £45 to £46 10s. ; loaf, £56 ; Company's, £60 per ton. Coffee is rather dull. Manila is quoted at B|d. per lb. in bond ; plantation, lOf d. per lb. . in bond. Candles are exceedingly dull of sale, and Belmonts and Nevas cannot be quoted higher than 15d. per lb. ; other candles, lid. to Is. 2d. periflb., according to weight. Kxoe is steady ; new Patna moves off slowly at £18 per ton ; old, £16 10s. to £17 per ton. Salt. — At the commencement of the week sales of Liverpool salt were made at £4 10s. per ton, but since the loss of the 'Sovereign of the Seas' with a large quantity on board, the price has slightly improved, and the present quotation is £4 15s. to £5 per ton ; fine salt, £4 ss. to £4 10s. per ton. Deied Fruits are more in demand, at a shade higher rates. Good curranus are worth 4|d. to 4£d. per ft> ; raisins, Elemes, 6d. to 6^d. perßj.; muscatels, 10|d. perlb. Figs are very scarce, and command 9d. to lOd. per lb. Oilmen's Stoees are, with the exception of oils and one or two articles, dull of sale, and prices nominally the same as la&t week. Tobacco is very firm. Sales of Lion brand have been made at 2s. 6d. per lb., and holders will not sell under 2s. 9d. per Bb.
