MR. JAMES HANNAY.

The 'Atheumum' pays tlie following just tribute to the brilliant author of "Singleton Fontenoy," on his departure for tho north :—: — "Mr. James Hannay is about to withdraw from literary labour in London, to assume the editorship of the ''Edinburgh Courant,' — an office in which he had at leas>t one noble predecessor, namely, Daniel Defoe. What is our loss is a great gain to our Scottish friends, who are not unacquainted with the value of their new acquisition. Mr. Hannay will take with him the good wishes of all his old London colleagues. They who differed from him in politics, admired the skill and the temper with which he expounded his own opinions ; all unite in acknowledging Ids wide range of scholarship, his powers of observation, the logical character of his judgment, and his happy facility and elegance of expression. Mr. Hannay has reaped honours in many a varied field of literature ; we have no doubt of his adding to them in the performance of an office for which he is peculiarly qualified. If the latter leaves him any leisure, we ventuie to recommend him to devote it to an illustration of the history and tiadifoons of the country in which, we know, he takes a particular interest." We may add that a farewell dinner is to be given to Mr. Hannay in the course of the ensuing week, by his London literary friends. It is understood that Mr. Thackeiay will take the chair on the occasion.
