H.M. STEAMER "NIGER."
Wb have much pleasure in giving insertion to the following correspondence, concerning the timely exploit of Captain Craoroft and the gallant little party under hi« command at Waireka.
Colonial Secretary's Office, Auckland, 17th April, 1880. Sib, — I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Honor 'i letter, of the 3rd instant, transmitting a copy of « Retolution adopted at » Public Meeting of the people of Auckland, together with a letter addressed by your Honor to Captain Cracroft, H.M.S. "Niger," expressive of the sentiments of the people of Auokland with respect to the gallant conduct of that officer, and thoae under his command, at Waireka in the Province of Taranoki, and I have to inform your Honor that these enclosures were duly forwarded by His Excellency the Governor to Captain Cracroft, who has returned the enclosed reply addressed to your Honor. I also enclose copies of His Excellency's letter to Captain Cracroft and that officer's answer.

Government House, Auckland, 13th April, 1860. Sir, — I have the honor to forward a letter from the Superintendent of Auckland, covering a resolution, passed by acclamation at a Public Meeting of the people of Auckland, held on the evening of the 2nd instant. II gires me great pleasure to convey to you this expression of the feeling of the people of Auckland. The members of the Executive Council participate in these ■entiments, and none join in them more sincerly than Yours, &c, &c, (Signed) T. Gobe Browni, Governor. Capt. Cracroft, K.N., H.M.S. Niger.
H.M.S. Niger, in Manukau Harbour, 14th April, 1860. Sib, — I yesterd*y had the honor to receive your Ev cellency's letter of the 13th inst , covering a resolution passed by acclamation at a public meeting of the people of Auckland on the evening of the 2nd. In requesting you to be good enough to forward my reply to His Honor the Superintendent, I have to thank your Excellency for the very nattering and kind terms in which you have made this communication, and I beg you will convey to the members of the Executive Council an expression of grateful acknowledgement from myself, the officer*, and ship's company of the "Niger." I have, &c, P. Cracroft, Captain. His Excellency Colonel Thomas Gore Browne, C.8., Governor, &c, &c, New Zealand.

Sir, — I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt yesterday of your letter of the 3rd instant, with a copy of a reaolution adopted by acclamation at a Public Meeting of the people of Auckland on tha evening of the 2nd. In requesting you will accept the sincere acknowledgement* of our thanki, I beg to assure you that the officers and men under my command join with me in highly appreciating such a" very flattering record of any lervices rendered when employed, in conjunction with the military, local volunteer force, and militia, upon a late occasion at Taranaki, and that we shall always retain a grateful recollection of the warm and cordial expressions of good feeling of the generous inhabitants of Auckland.
