The Choral Society. — We remind such of our newcomers as are musical that the Choral Society has still room for more working members. We recommend those who are anxious-to join, to apply to Mr. Reid, the Honorary Secretary of the Society, or to Mr. Brown, the conductor.
Flax Paper.— We were much gratified a few days ago to see some remarkably good samples of paper manufactured out of the phormium tenax by Messrs. McCormaok and Andrews. Although neither bleached nor sized, the texture of the sheet showed that the material is well adapted for the purpose, the paper being remarkably tough and close-grained. The manufacturers are not, we know, in a position to spend much, money on the work, but we believe that with those aids and appliances which money only can procure, they would be able to turn out a very good article. The manufacture is well worthy of attention.
New Zealand Gazette. — A Gazette was published ,| on Wednesday afternoon. It contains Dr. Hockstetter l^ lecture delivered at Nelson, extracts from which' havev already appeared in these columns. j
Thb Tempekance Sooiety.— -The usual monthly ! meeting of this Society was held, on Tuesday evening, Mr. W. Rattrqy in the ohair. The attendance was not so good as it has generally been hitherto, but all present"! seemed deeply interested in the objects of the Society. Mr. A. Clark and Mr. Rowe addressed the meeting. The former gentleman is well known as a public speaker, but we cannot refrain from mentioning the surprise with which we listened to the latter. He certainly possesses very considerable powers as a speaker, and seemed j to be perfectly master of his subject, and an enthusiast in the cause which he advocates. His remarks on the effects of habits of sobriety in the parents on the intellectual progress of their children were evidently the result of much thought and practical observation ; and the manner in which he expressed his ideas was well calculated to fix the attention of his audience. His address was remarkably well received. We wish the members of the Society every success in their philanthropic enterprise.
Race Meeting.— We remind our readers that a meeting of those interested in racing has been catted for Saturday, in order to take steps to get up- race* in January. It is to be hoped that the nobU spet£ i*,nbt to become a thing only to be remembered in Auckland,
Pbotection op Pbopkbtt.— £t£ will be seen from our police reports, a case of burgßhry has lately occurred at theßev.Mr. Jones's. We commented in our last on the necessity of persons looking well after their own property, and of the Police being on the alert. We understand since that the police and the Inspector himself are in the habit of visiting even the remote parts of the Suburbs, and w» believe that Mr. Naughton is a most indefatigable officer, but the number of our police, ought we believe, with our growing population to be considerably augmented. The present force are too weak to -allow many men to be stationed on outlying beats, but such an arrangement is every day becoming more necessary.
