MELBOURNE. [By Electric Telegraph ] [From the Correspondent of the Sydney M. Herald.) Melbourne, Friday, Dec. 17, 7 p.m.
Both Houses to adjourn to-night. The Governor gave the Royal assent to several measures, including the Shortening Duration of Parliament Bill, which is reserved for Royal pleasure. The business of the Assembly was wasted last night, in consideration of a breach of privilege committee by the 'Age' newspaper, for accusing the Chairman of Committees with gross dereliction of duty. Mr. Ebenezer Syme was ordered to attend the House to-day, andfowo hours have already been occupied in the discussion of the question, which has not yet terminated. The holidays have already begun in trade. The Columbian sails from the Bay for the Heads at daylight in the morning, to await the arrival of the City of Sydney, to tranship the Sydney mail. The National Bank was opened, but business refused.
