THE SOUTHERN CROSS. Tuesday, May 18, 1858.

LVCEO WON URO. "If I have been extinguished, rot there ris» A ftouiand beacons from the spark I bor"^

I establish eittar the Town Council, or the HarI tour Commuß, although they themselves, inveighed so recklessly against the destruction 0/ IK those bodies by Dr. Campbells Government. |L It is indeed a remarkable fact, that the bitterpolitical conflicts in which we have found engaged, have been in support of the W^Gft, repeatedly violated by the party opposed to tis either by passing enactments, when in power, absolutely repugnant to the law of England, or by barefaced, avowed infraction of the law of the { colony, for the sake of carrying political objects. And yet that very party, continually so engaged, p are so insensible to ridicule as to call themselves, \ by way of a distinctive appellation, the Constitutional party. The subject which has been thus lightly touched upon in our article of this day, shall be presently fully developed, at convenient leisure.

The election for the Southern Division is a-tie 453 ; Haul tain, 453. A question has since been raised whether a vote, rejected at Papakura by the Deputy Returning Officer, with the consent of both the check-clerks, could be taken by the Principal Returning Officer. It ■will be easily understood why we should not -»\ argue the matter; which, however, when the W time shall arrive, we are prepared to do at length. It may suffice to observe for the prese.at, that if the- Principal Returning Officer insert a Vote not recorded between the hours of 9 and 4 (it is only at a late hour that we have been made acquainted with the claim, wherefore we are obliged to argue upcifi statements of fact as supplied to us) he takes upon himself the office of scrutineer ; and would Lave to strike off more than one vote, accepted in error" on Haultain's, as well as one stated to have been rejected in error, on Graham's side.
