ENGLISH COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
The English news to hand by the Columbian is of a cheering character. Money was much easier, and the rate of discount charged by the Bank of England wasreduced to 3 per cent. Consols had advanced from 2to 3 per cent, since last account, and were quoted at 97. Australian securities do not seem, however, to have participated to the same extent in the improvement. The following were the latest prices : — Bank of NewSouth Wales, 44 to 46 •, Bank of Australasia, 84 to 86 Union, 45 to 47 ; ditto New, 25 to 28 ; London Chartered Bank of Australia, 18 to 19 ; English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered, 18 to 18^, ex div. ; and New South Wales Government Debentures, 95 to 96. Business done at -95^ and-95|. Wool, our staple commodity, has improved in prict, and it is anticipated that at the public wool sales, which were to commence on the 25th February, an advance of fully 1| per lb. would be established. Tallow has been somewhat depressed, and a further decline of £3 to £3 10s. per ton has taken place. Hides are also dull of sale, and have fallen about £d. per lb. since last report.
