THE WALLACE MONUMENT.
To the Editor of the Southern Cross. Sir,— Another anniversary of Scotland's Patron Saint has passed away, and in speeches and libations been commemorated in customary fashion. It is no doubt pleasant, on these distant shores, to meet now and then with our fellow-countrymen— to call up the scenes of our Fatherland, and send our souls back to the ages of old, to the days of other years. But in this practical world, such pleasures are evanescent, and lose half their value, unless they inspire some noble sentiment, or some present duty. I would like, Sir, to indulge the hope that in these respects the late anniversary will not prove b.irr^u of results, but that the love of countty, whi6h doubtless upon that occisioi) was glowing m every bo->om, will now manifest itself in substantial homage to the memory of one of of the noblest of Scotland's sons. It is fitting that this homage should be paid. It is the maik of the nat ion's appreciation of the great and good in humanity. As for Wallace, what is it to him '/ His disinterested patriotism and chivalrous deeds belong to the world, and will, of themselves, I stnnd forth to posterity, a vast and imperishable monument o'' rlie quenchless fire of the freeman's heart, and the resistless might of the freeman's arm I am, Sir, A Scotchman. Auckland, 8 Dec, 1857.
