AUCKLAND CATTLE SHOW.
Notwithstanding the gloomy forbodings of failure that had been uttered, on the ground that the proper . time had not been chosen for an exhibition of this kind, 'the cattle show held yesterday was a great success. The entries were rerj numerous, and the class of cattle exhibited far beyond the arerage. It appeared to us that the horses and sheep carrid the day . of the former there were 65 entered ; of the latter 120. Of horned cattle there were entered 70, whilst of pigs there were only 8 entries, The agricultural implements and machinery exhibited attracted, as they deserved, general attention. These included winnowing, thrashing, and reaping machines. We have not spaoe on this occasion to enter into details, but we trust in our next publication to be able to lay befor our readers a full account of the proceedings of the day. His Excellency the Governor, who arrived on the ground shortly after 11 o'clock, was conducted through the exhibition by the Stewards, and, after having inspected the cattle under exhibition, left for town to return again to be present at the dinner. The Band of the 58th Regt., bythe kind permission of Colonel Wynyard, was present during the day, and it is hardly necessary to say greatly contributed to the enjoyment ot the visitors. The ground was well filled, and we believe that there was but one opinion as to the complete success of the exhibition.
000 W«are sorry to learn that an affraythas taken place at Otahuhu between some of the Pensioners and a party natives. We are not yet in possession of full particulars, or in a position to be positive as to facts, but apprehend that in this instance, the natives were to blame. About 50 or 60 natives, it appears, had burst into Mr. Hall's store, and were carrying away sundry articles, mainly boots and shoes. The pensioners who were near at hand interfered in support of Mr. Hall, and an affray took place, in which one of the natives got a broken head and the party as they thoroughly deserved, judging from the accounts that have reached us, a well .merited thrashing.
